Samuel James is a photographer, writer and teacher from Cincinnati, Ohio, whose work studies people and place. For his photographic inquiry into the impact of the oil industry in the Niger Delta, he received the Overseas Press Club Olivier Rebbot Award, a Special Commendation from the Frontline Club and was nominated for an ASME National Magazine Award and the Visa d’Or. He received a 2013 Getty Images Editorial Grant and was named “One of the 20 photographers to watch in 2013″ by the British Journal of Photography. Together with Gary Knight, he helped found the Program for Narrative & Documentary Practice at the Institute for Global Leadership at Tufts University in 2011, where he teaches non-fiction, narrative storytelling part of the year. He is a Contributing Artist at Harper’s Magazine.
